Mallorca is an island situated in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Spain. It is a hot tourist destination for vacationers interested in adventurous outdoor activities, and today receives nearly 6 million tourists every year. Climbing, trekking, and camping are the favorite activities of tourists coming over to Mallorca. Mallorca is not a mountainous region, it is just an island. Still there are many places providing opportunities of climbing, and these are routes that are for the more experienced ones as well as simple routes ideal for the beginners. You wouldn’t find the mention of Mallorca when you see ardent climbers talking about climbing sports of the world, but the sheer numbers of tourists coming here for climbing is proof enough of its popularity.
If you are coming to Mallorca from Barcelona in Spain, it is better to keep your luggage behind in Barcelona apartments and come over with the least amount of baggage with yourself. The same holds for Madrid apartments. Coming back to beautiful Mallorca, it is perhaps the largest Balearic Island, and what is really exciting is the geological relief of the place which is made up of mostly limestone. There are caves, cliffs, canyons, and then there are mountainous terrains. The beaches and the coves provide perfect places to spend leisurely holidays hard to forget.
For climbing fans, there are 16 main sectors while there are smaller areas with hundreds of climbing spots. With a few mountainous regions, one gets some traditional climbing spots too. Even hikers are not disappointed when they come to Mallorca, and this is one reason why Mallorca gets so many visitors from Germany and UK, especially in their rainy seasons. If you want to get to the top of the highest mountain in Mallorca, it is not possible as the summit of the highest mountain called Puig Major (1445m) has some military installations and climbers are not allowed beyond the highest spot called Massanella that stands at 1352m. Most of the climbing spots in Mallorca are in the northern part of the island. However, there are a few climbing areas in the southern part also lying close to the sea side.
Spring and autumn are two times of the year when the conditions are ideal for climbing as there is little moisture in the atmosphere and the temperatures are also pleasant. However, there are those brave climbers who celebrate Christmas at Mallorca. It is only summers when one should avoid climbing as it is too hot and also because there are far too many tourists in Mallorca.
As for the campers, there are three main camping sites and tourists are prohibited from going outside these three areas for their camping activities. The three areas are Lluc Monastery, Club San Pedro, and Sun Club Picafort. It is Sun Club Picafort that remains open round the year for the campers.
