Airport limousine manufacturer’s warranty is a legal commitment. It promises that the vehicle will perform in the normal and customary manner for which it is designed. If a part malfunctions or fails (unless it’s because of owner negligence or poor maintenance), the dealer must fix or replace the defective part or parts and bill the automaker or warranty company for all of the part and labour costs. Warranties are an important factor in Lemon-Aid’s ratings. Unfortunately, it has been our experience that most automakers cheat on their warranty obligations and inflate the cost of scheduled maintenance work.
Most new-vehicle warranties fall into two categories: bumper-to-bumper for a period of 3 to 5 years, and powertrain for up to 5 years/100,000 km. Automakers sometimes charge an additional $5o-$ioo fee for repairs requested by purchasers of used vehicles with unexpired base warranties. For snowbirds, the federal and provincial governments can charge GST and sales tax on warranty and non-warranty repairs done south of the borderbeware. Also, keep in mind that some automakers, like Honda, may not honour your warranty if a vehicle is purchased in Canada and registered in the United States.
